Done is better than perfect

What do WCAG and a toothpick have in common?

Both are used to test how well the product is baked; under the surface!

A baker testing a cake with a toothpick

The Toothpick test is the most established way of checking if your cake is baked at the core. Similarly, the WCAG is the final test of your digital product for accessibility.

But just as the toothpick to test does not teach you how to bake a cake, WCAG does not completely guide a designer to make the apps accessible. This is where I want to contribute!

I went through the overwhelming plethora of accessibility guidelines, just to realize, that they are not that tough! They are just geared towards making the applications perfectly accessible. However, for the WCAG success criteria tests to run successfully, the application needs to be in a ‘coded’ state. Because of the reasons mentioned above, designers are very far removed from these guidelines, contributing to the ignorance!

Hence, I decided to find hacky ways and practical rituals to make apps usable with assistive technologies. Imagine your visit to a family doctor. Instead of giving you the perfect bio-physio-chemical explanation of why your throat is sore, they send you home with a piece of practical advice on how to fix that. This substack is exactly that!

I talk about design systems, how to improve them from an accessibility perspective, and a few tricks to get things done… because I believe, Done is better than perfect!
